First thing is if your surround sound receiver does not have a phono input with built in phonostage as many newer receivers do not to cut down on costs then you will need a external phono preamp. This first boosts the level of the low level signal from the cartridge and then re-equalizes the recorded music from the vinyl back to a flat response. Records are recorded with bass frequency’s lowered in volume and high frequency’s boosted. The RIAA equalization in the phono preamp re-equalizes the recorded sound on the record back to a flat response.

You must also match the phono cartridge to the turntables tonearm, and the cartridge to the phono preamp. First the cartridge must match the tonearms lateral mass. This is kinda like matching shocks to a car, light car needs shocks that are less stiff, and heavy car needs stiff shocks, for the cars to ride right and stay on the road. The reason for this is in order for the cartridge to track properly in the groves you want the cartridge to be staple in the grove and not mis-track.

Really poorly matching combinations can even cause the cartridge to jump out of the grove or completely mis-track causing bad distortion. Proper tracking force and antiscating must also be set properly, so ether someone that knows how to setup turntables or you take the time to get the right information and tools is required.

The original goal of this project was to recreate a stereo system similar to the one I owned in college in the early 70’s and later sold when I needed the money after college. Sounds great, except chances are you have those same apps also in a different component. So why would you want one?

Whether you’ve inherited your father’s vinyl collection or you’re an audiophile that just prefers the sound quality of records, chances are you’ll need a good phono preamp to connect your turntable to your modern stereo system. If you’re planning on hooking up your turntable to a stereo receiver, you’re going to want this preamp to get the high sound quality that you expect from vinyl. Do I Really Need It? Most likely, you do. The majority of newer stereo receivers lack a phono input, which would directly connect them to the turntable.

You’ll need the preamp to connect to the phono output of the turntable and the line input of the receiver. And even newer turntables that may feature a built-in preamp probably aren’t going to give you the highest quality sound that could be achieved from an external preamp. Quick, Easy Setup You don’t need to be a sound engineer or techie to understand this preamp’s setup process. It takes only a minute to power up the preamp with it’s included 12 Volt DC Adapter.

Cassette decks are still available, and most stereo receivers provide an input to connect them, along with inputs for the other audio and video components that may comprise a home theater system. However, that input will be more clearly labeled on some receivers than others. With some models, this input may simply be labeled “Tape” or “Audio 1,” but with newer, video-oriented receivers you may need to use a composite input designated for an analog video source, such as a VCR, labeled “Video 1” or something similar.

The input for a CD player may be used as well; select the input based on availability and which other devices you wish to connect. Connect a set of composite cables from the the “Out” jack on the rear of the cassette deck to the “In” jack of the chosen audio input on the receiver, matching the white and red cable connectors to their proper color-coded connection ports. Connect another set of composite cables from the “In” jack of the cassette deck to the “Out” jack of the chosen audio input, in cases where both sets are offered for that input.

Let the sc37 power the others. And,of course, hook the appropriate channels from the xpa-5 to the appropriate speakers. Mark Ok I think I know what your saying.

Optical audio cables are a great option for any home theater or audio system. These cords use light to transmit the audio signals from the audio source to the receiver, and because of this, they are not affected by any electrical interference. Optical audio cables, also commonly referred to as Toslink cables, are especially recommended for old homes where there are more chances of electrical leaks due to the accumulation of moisture.

Optical audio cables also provide far superior audio quality as compared to standard coaxial cables. However, these pieces of equipment are not the cheapest ones on the market, so there are a couple of things that you should keep in mind when connecting an optical audio cable to your receiver.
